Dentists say that the most important part of tooth care happens at home. Brushing and flossing properly, along with the dentist regularly can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

If you’re like most people, do not crave much thought must go to the dentist’s drill used to heal your teeth, therefore, is not it better to prevent cavities before they begin?

Removing dental plaque
To prevent cavities, you need to remove dental plaque, the transparent layer of bacteria that coats teeth. The best way to do this is by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Brushing also stimulates the gums, which helps keep them healthy and prevent disease. Brushing and flossing are the most important steps you can take to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

The Toothpastes contain abrasives, detergents and foaming agents. Fluoride, the most common active ingredient in toothpaste, is what prevents cavities. Therefore, you must make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride.

Approximately one in ten people have a tendency to accumulate tartar quickly. Tartar is a hardened plaque is more damaging and difficult to remove. Use toothpastes and mouthwashes that fight plaque and spend a few extra minutes to brush teeth near the salivary glands (the inside of the front teeth of the lower jaw and the outside of the teeth located at the bottom of the jaw above), may delay the development of plaque.

If your teeth are sensitive to heat, cold and pressure, you may want to buy a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. But you may need to talk to your dentist about tooth sensitivity because it may indicate a more serious problem-a cavity or nerve inflammation (irritation).

Tips for flossing
Dentists say that the time at least that you are brushing your teeth stay two minutes, twice a day. Here are some instructions on how to brush properly:

Hold your toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees above your gum. Gently brush from where it joins the gum and tooth until the tooth surface that is used for chewing with short (about half a tooth). Brushing too hard can cause gums to suffer giving way, sensitive teeth and over time, loosening of teeth.
Use the same method to brush the inner and outer surfaces of your teeth.
To clean the surfaces of your teeth used to chew, do it with short strokes, making sure to brush between the slots, spaces or gaps between each tooth.
To clean the inner surfaces of the top and bottom of the front combatants and gums, hold the toothbrush vertically. Applying moves forward and backward, using the front of the toothbrush to brush your teeth and gums.
Using a forward movement, lightly brush your tongue and the upper inside of your mouth to remove bacteria that stay in those places.
While brushing your teeth using a stopwatch (or a kitchen timer indicating how long you cook the eggs) or hear a favorite song to get used to brush their teeth for 2 or 3 minutes. Some electric toothbrushes have timers that alert you when two minutes have elapsed.
Data on the use of dental floss
Brushing is important but does not remove food particles that can lodge between your teeth, under your gums or under braces. These spaces need to brush at least once a day.

The type of floss you choose depends on the size of space you have between your teeth. Dentists recommend flossing usually free of wax because it is thinner and therefore easier to slide between the teeth. However, studies have shown no difference in the effectiveness of dental floss based on the type you choose.

With any floss, you should be careful to avoid hurting the gums. You must follow these instructions:

Carefully enter the floss between two teeth, using a forward motion and backward. Gently place the floss into the gum base, but do not try to forcibly inserting the floss under the gums. Flossing should surround the edge of the tooth, like the letter C, and so you should slide from the top to the bottom of each tooth.
Repeat this process between all teeth and remember to floss in the back of the teeth (the ones at the ends of the mouth).
Teeth Whitening Products
Some toothpastes claim to whiten teeth. There is nothing wrong with using whitening toothpastes as long as they contain fluoride and ingredients that fight plaque and tartar. But these toothpastes alone do not contain high amounts of bleaching agents and probably can not see apparent changes in the color of your teeth.

It’s easy to get carried ads with messages that say whiten teeth. But those ads are generally targeted at older people. The truth is that most teenagers do not need tooth whitening because being so young still have their yellow teeth, as with the elderly. If you think your teeth are not white enough, check with your dentist before you try a whitening product for sale without prescription. Your dentist may be able to offer a professional treatment according to your specific needs that probably has more effect than a product for sale without prescription.

Be careful when buying teeth whitening products are sold to the public without prescription. Some bleaching agents may damage your gums and mouth. Always follow the instructions you use whitening products.

The connection to nutrition
Consume sugar, as you probably know, is a major cause of tooth decay. But this is not how much sugar you consume-consume when and how they can be as important to keep your teeth healthy.

When you eat sugary foods or drink sodas frequently throughout the day, the enamel that protects your teeth is constantly exposed to acidic elements. Hard candies, which are taken to relieve coughs or sore throats, or mints that contain sugar are especially dangerous because they dissolve slowly in your mouth. Many experts say that when you eat foods containing sugar, do it in intervals of three hours.

When you eat foods with sugar or starch as part of a full meal, they are less hazardous to your teeth than when eaten alone, probably because the production of saliva, which dissolves the sugar and bacteria, is increased when you eat a meal complete. Eating sugary foods before going to sleep is what can make the most damage (especially if you brush your teeth afterward) because you do not produce as much saliva when you sleep.

For most people, it is difficult to eliminate completely sweet, therefore, try to follow the following recommendations are a bit more realistic:

Eat carbohydrates (sugars and starches) as part of a meal.
If you can not brush your teeth after eating, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash, or chew sugarless gum.
Do not eat sugary foods between meals.
If you snack or eat between meals, try to choose foods that contain sugar such as cheese, popcorn, raw vegetables or yogurt.
Visiting the dentist
The main reason for going to the dentist regularly, every six months? Is prevention . The goal is to prevent tooth decay, gum disease and other disorders that put your dental and oral health at risk.

Your first consultation with a dentist will probably consist of three parts: your medical and dental history (where the dentist or dental hygiene manager, dental hygienist, will ask questions about caring for your teeth and review your dental care record) A dental examination and professional cleaning.

The dentist will examine your teeth, your gums and other important parts of your mouth. He or she can examine the joints of your jaws. To do this, use a mirror and a metal instrument used to make it easier to check the crown (the visible) of each tooth. This is done to check the plaque and evidence of looseness or decay in teeth. The dentist can also check your bite and the way your teeth fit together (also called occlusion).

Your dentist will examine the general condition of your gums, which should be firm and pink, rather than fragile, swollen or inflamed. He or she (or an assistant) will use instruments to check the depth of your sulcus , the slight depression where each tooth meets the gum. The grooves, called pockets in English, are evidence of gum disease.

After examining the visible parts of your teeth and your mouth, your dentist will take X-ray images that might reveal tooth decay, abscesses (collections of pus surrounded by inflamed tissue), or wisdom teeth.

Professional cleaning is done usually by a dental hygienist, a dental professional specifically trained and licensed. The cleaning is to remove hardened deposits using a “scaler” (a tool that helps to scrape the deposit) or a machine that uses high frequency ultrasound to remove tartar deposits. The particles are then rinsed with water.

After cleaning, the dental hygienist will polish your teeth. This process cleans and smooths the surfaces of your teeth, removing stains and making it harder for plaque to adhere to your teeth. Finally, the hygienist may apply to your teeth a fluoride compound or a sealant to help prevent tooth decay.

At the end of your visit, the dentist will let you know if you need to treat a cavity back. Your dentist may also refer you to an orthodontist if he or she thinks you need braces or have other needs.

Other dental problems
Tooth decay can attack the teeth at any age. In fact, 84% of 17 year olds suffer from this condition. When not treated, decay can cause pain and can cause tooth loss. Missing teeth can affect how you look and how you feel about yourself and your ability to chew and speak. Treating tooth decay can also be expensive, so prevention and early treatment and prevention are important.

It may surprise you to know that 60% of 15 year olds suffer from gingivitis , the first stage of gum disease. Gingivitis, which involves the gums excluding ligaments and bone located just below them, is usually a result of the accumulation of plaque. Just as with caries, treatment for gingivitis can be expensive. If you remove plaque regularly and follow good oral hygiene habits, your gums will return to a healthy state. However, the gum disease can cause more serious inflammation of the gums, the redness and bleeding, and sometimes painful. The treatment that dentists use for gum disease depends on the magnitude or extent of the disease.

While periodontal disease are not the primary cause of death in the dental pulp, unhealthy gums can increase your risk of losing teeth or need a root canal. While brushing your teeth twice a day is essential for good oral hygiene, brushing alone can not protect yourself from gum disease and tooth loss may result.

Many people with sensitive gums or bleeding may be tempted to avoid flossing for fear of worse your bleeding gums, but in fact the floss can improve the health of your gums, thus helping to prevent bleeding .

In a study in 2006, researchers compared the effects of brushing alone against brushing and flossing the bleeding gums in 51 twin pairs. One of each pair of twins brushed their teeth twice a day and the other brush and floss twice a day. After two weeks, the twins who had used dental floss had 38% less than areas with bleeding gums.

Even if you were inconsistent with the flossing during your childhood or adolescence, it is never too late to start maintaining good oral hygiene can improve the health of your gums with dental floss.

Specialized dental floss such as Oral-B ® SATINfloss are designed to be soft and comfortable for sensitive gums, but strong enough to remove plaque accumulated around the teeth.

Brushing teeth properly and consistently helps to remove most dental plaque, but brushing alone can not remove the plaque that is located in places the brush can not reach – especially in the spaces between the teeth. In addition to removing plaque, flossing also helps to:

Remove debris that adheres to teeth and gums between the teeth.
Polish the tooth surface.
Control bad breath.
Shall be performed flossing at least once a day for two or three minutes for it to be more effective.

What kind of floss is best?

Regardless of the type of floss you are most comfortable using, the oral health benefits remain the same – clean regular consistent flossing is the most important weapon against plaque formation – perhaps more important than brushing. Different types of floss include:

Waxed and unwaxed.
Flavored and unflavored.
Wide and regular.

Methods flossing adult

Your dentist or other oral health professional can provide a demonstration of any of the following techniques of flossing:

Spool method (also known as the finger-wrap method)
Cut a piece of floss about 18 to 20 inches (45 to 50 cm) long. Lightly wrap each end of floss several times around the middle finger. Then, carefully maneuver the floss between teeth with your finger and thumb movements up and down, not side to side. It is better to move the floss up and down making sure to go below the gumline, forming a “C” next to each tooth.

Loop method (also called the circle method)
Cut a piece of floss about 18 inches (45 cm) long, and tie it securely in a circle. Then place all the fingers except the thumb, within the loop. Then use your index fingers to guide the floss through the lower teeth, and use your thumbs to guide the floss through the upper teeth, making sure to go below the gumline, forming a “C” side of each tooth.
Other techniques of flossing:

Tools flossing, as the thread holders, may be useful for people who are learning to floss, individuals with limited dexterity in their arms or hands, or for people who clean the teeth of someone else ( particularly a child or a disabled person).

Irrigating devices, such as water toothpicks are not considered as a substitute for brushing and flossing. These devices may be effective around orthodontic braces that retain food or in areas a toothbrush can not reach. However, do not remove plaque.

There is evidence that periodontal disease may increase during adolescence due to the lack of motivation to practice oral hygiene. Children who maintain good oral hygiene habits to 13 years are more likely to continue brushing and flossing than children who were not taught proper oral care.

Hormonal changes related to puberty in adolescents may increase the risk of developing periodontal disease. During puberty, the increase in the level of hormones like progesterone and possibly estrogen, cause increased blood circulation in the gums. This can cause increased gum sensitivity and a stronger reaction to any irritation, including food particles and plaque. During this time, gums can become inflamed, red and feel sore.

As young people get passed puberty, the tendency of the gums to swell in response to irritants decreases. However, it is very important that during puberty is still a good oral hygiene regimen at home, including brushing and flossing routine use. In some cases, a dental professional may recommend periodontal therapy to help prevent damage to the tissues and bone surrounding the teeth.

To floss follow these steps:
1. Cut about 50 cm of floss and wind most of one of the middle fingers.
2. Wrap the remaining string on the same finger of the opposite hand. This finger may be picking up the floss as it is used.
3. Tensar a piece about 2-3 inches of floss using the thumbs and index fingers.
4. Insert the floss between teeth using a gentle sawing motion. When the floss reaches the gumline, curve into a C shape against one tooth and slide it gently into the space between the gum and tooth until you feel resistance. Never apply violently against the gums.
5. Rub the floss against the tooth to remove food debris and plaque.
6. Repeat these operations with the rest of the teeth, using a clean piece of floss for each.
