Tooth decay, otherwise known as dental caries, is as considered one of the most common conditions worldwide; in fact, it is second to the common cold as the most common health problem. It affects everyone, young or old alike. It can be caused by milk and baby bottle for an infant, sweet foods and improper oral hygiene for children, and inappropriate diet and vices for older people. Since tooth decay has an impact in a person’s self-esteem and health in general, it is important that tooth decay is treated promptly and well.

Treatment for dental caries can be categorized into two – treatment for tooth decay at its onset, and treatment for tooth decay in its later stages.

If tooth decay has not yet destroyed the affected tooth, the usual methods of treatment are proper oral hygiene, fluoride, and regular check-ups to the dentist. This is because if tooth decay is diagnosed at an early stage, its progression can be blocked, future decays reversed, and unnecessary expenses prevented.

Proper oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing, is a great way to prevent further damage, or to keep new decays from occurring. Using fluoride toothpaste or undergoing fluoride treatment, is another treatment advised by dentists to stop tooth decay before cavities are formed, and to reduce the chances of sensitive teeth that is a common complication of weakened teeth. Check-ups with the dentist are advised at least twice a year. This is so that your dentist can advise treatments if tooth decay is diagnosed, and can even help educate you in the proper caring of your teeth through pictures, and readings.

For infants, where the common cause of tooth decay is milk that stays in the baby’s mouth while sleeping, or a baby bottle that is used as a tether, parents are trained on how to properly schedule feeding time to prevent any dental problems .

If, however, the damage in your cavities made by tooth decay has become extensive, other dental treatments are advised such as fillings, crown, root canal and extraction. Filling is the advisable treatment if tooth decay has already destroyed parts of the tooth or resulted in a chipped tooth. Silver alloy or plastic fillings are applied as replacement, or to restore the original shape of the tooth after the decayed part has been removed.

A crown is applied if the damage to the tooth is more extensive. In this type of treatment, decayed or weakened areas of the tooth are removed, replaced, and fitted with a crown – that serves as a replacement for a part or for the whole tooth. It is also used for teeth that are severely damaged for fillings to work.

In cases where nerve endings of the tooth have died due to tooth decay, or the infected part is the pulp of the tooth, the third type of treatment is applied – root canal. In this procedure, the dentist removes the center of the tooth, nerves, and blood vessel tissues. The exposed tooth is then filled with a sealing material such as silver alloy, and then sealed with fillings or fitted with a crown.

The fourth treatment – extraction, is the treatment that everyone wants to avoid. In cases where the root of the tooth becomes greatly damaged by tooth decay, the entire tooth may need to be removed.

These treatments are developed to aid people with tooth decay depending on the severity of their condition. However, one should not rely on these available treatments to justify taking their teeth for granted. Remember that prevention and identification of the cause of your tooth decay is always better than cure.

We all recognize the importance of keeping our mouths clean and neat, but mostly we spent time and care, so at any stage of life from birth, through adult, oral hygiene is important to prevent diseases that can be painful and lead to loss of teeth.

Among the best known oral disease, highlight:

    * Decay, which is the progressive deterioration and destruction of teeth by the action of acids that are generating some microorganisms living in the mouth. Many times by too much sweets.
* Granuloma, also often called a dental abscess, and is a process in which dead cells accumulate and causing a severe bacterial infection, which must be addressed immediately by the dentist.
* Furthermore tooth sensitivity, also considered an oral disease, causes pain, either versus cold drinks or foods, as well as against the hot, acidic, sweet, and this is because the bottom of the tooth called root is exposed, by inflammation of the gums.
* When there is any inflammation of the gums is always necessary to consult, because gingivitis is one of them, and makes the gums bleed often and sore to the touch, which in its most advanced periods is called periodontal disease.

* A few years ago I managed this tooth and now I have a dark color.
* By an accident I was hit in the upper front teeth and after a while one of them was dark
* My son, the dentist did a root canal and the tooth now has a different color.

These comments are fortunately not too often heard, but they can happen. In the case of dental trauma without proper monitoring and treatment, the tooth in most cases this will change color.

The dental procedures that involve removing the pulp organ “Nerve” is often the case that eventually change color.

The cause of this phenomenon is due to: For the specified root canal or dental trauma, there is internal bleeding inside the tooth pigmentation and after a while the tooth is dark, because the blood hemoglobin is oxidized from a normal color to gray or dark brown. Usually this process is asymptomatic patient is not perceived “pain”
The treatment involves placing a whitening toothpaste in the affected tooth and let it act for a period of 48 hours. In the second session desobtura the tooth and if necessary re-use the same process.

This is repeated up to three times, if not the desired color is achieved by the tooth will receive a veneer or crown, to change its color.

In case the non-vital bleaching procedure is successful in the second session, the tooth should be sealed permanently with a luminoactivado material.

There are cases where it is needed root canal again to come to fruition

Clinical studies in patients over time have shown that dental fillings made with this material are durable and do not harm your overall health.

Dental amalgam is considered a filler material durable and versatile than has been in use for over 150 years and has restored the teeth of more than 1000 million people.

Dental amalgam contains a mixture of metals such as mercury, silver, copper and tin that are chemically linked together into a hard substance, stable and secure.

Suspicions that mercury amalgam is harmful to health is unfounded. Dental amalgam has been studied extensively, and has established a record of safety and effectiveness, unprecedented in relation to other dental fillings.

What do health organizations say about amalgam?

The California Dental Association (CDA). The Food and Drug adminitration, U.S. Public Health Service, World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found in dental amalgam restoration material effectively. These public health organizations continue to monitor the literature and research to ensure public safety.

The Alzheimer’s Association says that “based on scientific evidence, there is no relationship between dental amalgam fillings and Alzheimer’s. . .The website of the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics found that dental amalgams are a source of mercury exposure that is associated with mild urinary excretion of mercury, but there is no evidence that this produces hypersensitivity reactions (allergy).

The experts from the National Institutes of Health have determined that the evidence indicates that dental amalgams are not a health hazard and should not be replaced to reduce exposure to mercury. Pediatrics, Vol 108, No. 1, July 2001, pp. 197-205.

The Autism Society of America no known cause for autism, but it is generally accepted that the cause might be abnormalities in brain structure or function.

The Consumer Reports Report “that as far as we know, his amalgam fillings do not cause any damage. If you need new fillings for posterior teeth, amalgam is still the cheapest option and durable” Irwin Mandel, DDS, June 2001 .

The Food and Drug Administration and other organizations of the American Public Health Service (USPHS) continue to investigate the safety of amalgams used in dental restorations. However, no valid scientific evidence to date has shown that amalgams cause harm to patients. FDA Consumer Update, December 31, 2002.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Societ says there is no scientific evidence to connect the development of multiple sclerosis or other neurological diseases with dental fillings containing mercury.

The New England Journal of Medicine says that “patients can be reassured that they have doubts about the potential link between mercury and degenerative diseases, the available evidence shows no connection.” The Toxicology of Mercury – Current Exposures and Clinical Manifestations Thomas W. Clarkson, Ph.D., Laszlo Magos, M.D., and Gary J. Myers, N Engl J Med 2003, 349:1731-1737, October 30, 2003

The U.S. Public Health Service and National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) said “we find no evidence in the nineties to discontinue the use of dental amalgam” Dr. Dushanka Kleinman, deputy director, NIDCR and chief dental officer, U.S. Public Health Service, July 2001.

The World Health Organization and the World Dental Federation say “No controlled study has demonstrated a relationship between the use of dental amalgam and systemic disease” Consensus statement, September 1997
The California Dental Association believes that dental amalgam is a valuable and safe option for patients and encourages and supports continued research and dialogue with public health organizations and environmental agencies.

Excessive ingestion of fluoride during the early childhood years may damage the tooth-forming cells, leading to a defect in the enamel known as dental fluorosis. Teeth impacted by fluorosis have visible discoloration, ranging from white spots to brown and black stains.

Teeth with fluorosis also have an increased porosity of the enamel. In the milder forms, the porosity is mostly limited to the sub-surface enamel, whereas in the more advanced forms, the porosity impacts the surface enamel as well, resulting in extensive pitting, chipping, fracturing, and decay of the teeth. The discoloration induced by fluorosis – particularly in its advanced forms – can cause significant embarrassment and stress to the impacted child, resulting in adverse effects on esteem, emotional health, and career success.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 32% of American children now have some form of dental fluorosis, with 2 to 4% of children having the moderate to severe stages (CDC 2005). While proponents of water fluoridation dismiss dental fluorosis as being simply a “cosmetic effect,” recent research indicates that the rate of bone fracture among children with fluorosis (even in the mild forms) is higher than the bone fracture rates among children with no fluorosis. As noted by Dr. Hardy Limeback, Head of Preventive Dentistry at the University of Toronto, “it is illogical to assume that tooth enamel is the only tissue affected by low daily doses of fluoride ingestion.”

Dental Cleaning: Possibly this is the best measure to alleviate this problem since when having a good dental cleaning will be killing bacteria that could not only aggravate the problem if these are possibly the production of oral malodor.

The main thing is to use a toothpaste also acknowledges that the brush is in good condition and complement this with a mouthwash. Perform after eating any food.

Parsley: This product offers a very viable cure to this problem because its components are able to quickly kill bacteria. You only need to boil in a pint of water three cloves, a pinch of ground cloves and some sprigs of parsley, after boiling, turn off and remove from heat, let stand for half an hour, filters and containers. This is used as a mouthwash, gargling several times a day.

Guavas: These fruits are rich in tannins, phosphorus, calcium, etc., Which will strengthen the gums and teeth. You only need to eat two or three a day, plus you can chew the leaves of guava, which also has properties that stops bleeding gums, and makes teeth more resistant.

Natural Juice: The juice of vegetables and fruits naturally (without adding sweeteners) not only succeed in making your immune system stronger against any condition, unless he managed to reduce the smell coming from poor digestion, and coupled with this, regulate normal physiological functions. It recommends two or three glasses a day.

The deterioration of the teeth by the bottle is a dental problem that can destroy the teeth of a child in the first 2 years.

CAUSES
The deterioration of the teeth by the bottle is produced by exposing the teeth to liquids containing sugars during long periods of time. Among these liquids are milk, juice, gelatin or other sugary liquids.

The tooth decay occurs in children who continue to suck for long periods of time (may happen, for example, if the mother falls asleep while the baby is nursing). The plaque of bacteria that is on the teeth uses these sugars as an energy source to form acids that attack tooth enamel.
